Adventure Time

I love me some adventure time. Since Vance was a baby, when we would load up what felt like the entire house into the car to go anywhere, I would say "Are you ready for adventure time?" In my sweetest mom voice of course. Now it truly means to go out into the wilderness somewhere which I've found in my more recent years to be very recharging for me.
With all these adventures I’m reminded just how much I love “home” here in the Upstate of South Carolina - we literally have the beach, several lakes, and mountains right within a 3 hour drive or less. Not to mention several metro cities. I’ve traveled to different places all over the US, a bit outside the US - but the SouthEast truly is a beautiful place to live.
Each month I'm sharing our adventures with links to connect you with better, healthier ideas for you and your family to also enjoy, get outdoors, and appreciate all that natue is for us all.
Keep adventuring friends!
MAY 2025
We adventured our tails off in May- YAY!
Our first adventure for May led us to Gorges State Park in North Carolina. Some pretty cool plants and a beautiful river- I'll spare you the nerd out on scientific names but be sure to watch the video and schedule a visit!
-------------------------------------------------------
Our next adventure for May led us to Douthat State Park in Virginia, we went for Mothers day to join my mother - who is likewise an outdoors-woman and loves to kayak - along with her kayaking crew who meet here annually for this trip. It's quite a beautiful park with more to-do than we had time for, but we just enjoyed some basic strolls, the beach at the lake, and the absence of wifi! There was a great store with souvenirs and a restaurant so you could drop in for a bite to eat ad also hook up to wifi if need be. Time to unplug is necessary I think with as much time as we spend on computers, phones, tablets, and social media so when I get the chance, I relish in the simple things like journaling by the fire in the morning sun.
We didn't even scratch the surface on this location and are planning to head back next year to join my mom and her kayaking friends - maybe next time you'll catch me with paddle in hand!
-------------------------------------------------------
All the locals know about the beauty of Lake Jocasee in the Blue Ridge Mountains, some of the clearest waters you'll find in the upstate area. As I mentioned my mother loves to kayak, and my honey knew of a local rental company Lake Jocasee kayaking where we could rent a couple of kayaks and join her for a short trip. The blue ridge mountains were a gorgeous constant background view and afterward we stopped by Upper Whitewater falls - a quick one mile hike with a pretty nice view!
-------------------------------------------------------
I will admit, I've never been one to go to museums or other science center type things (unless of course it was a field trip in grade school), but my honey made the suggestion to visit the Roper Mountain Science Center’s Starry Nights exhibit at the planetarium. This and other exhibits throughout the year are a great educational option instead of doing the same old movies or big air that we usually opt for. Helping our children learn to enjoy learning is one of our greatest achievements as parents, it's all about finding what sparks their interest. Me... the sky and telescopes are cool, but the giant lavendar bush and bees in the courtyard were my favorite :)
APRIL 2025
April started off with a bang with Spring break - Vance and I celebrated “Staycation” Style checking out Hatcher Garden, getting in some “big air,” and making some homemade pizza. Vance was elated to have an entire week off school and I soaked up all the quality time and snuggles I could.
In March, I adventured to Linville Falls and Linville Gorge. We actually found Coltsfoot and made a tincture from it! I've been dabbling a bit more in my medicinal herb foraging recently, again leaning into this one day homestead lifestyle.
In the second half of April I took a Saturday and headed up to Brevard to check out Moore Cove and Looking Glass Falls. The hike doesn’t have to be long but a creek or waterfall is a plus! I also love to stop and identify the blooming friends along the paths.
Stay tuned for our next Adventure, or share your favorite spots with me!
